FAQs

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is the insertion of fine, sterile needles (regulated by state and federal law) into specific points on the body as mapped out over the course of thousands of years by ancient Chinese healers. Studies have shown acupuncture to be a very effective treatment modality for a variety of diseases affecting individuals in ancient times as well as in the modern world. Oriental Medicine employs techniques from Traditional Chinese Medicine as well as from other Asian medicine techniques to create a more flexible treatment that can be tailored to each individual’s needs.

Will it hurt?

Each individual may experience a different sensation associated with needle insertion, however, the feeling of pain is not common. More common sensations include: dull aching, heaviness, tingling, numbness, vibrating, etc. These sensations usually pass within a minute or two. Leah has been trained in gentle technique and uses some of the thinnest needles on the market.  Should you experience any discomfort during or after your treatment, please communicate this and your treatment will be adjusted accordingly.

Are there any side effects?

Acupuncture is known to have very few complications that can occur in rare cases.  However, patients should be aware that occasionally, minor side effects may take place. These include: bruising, numbness/tingling, bleeding, less commonly: infection at insertion point, dizziness/fainting, muscle spasms, and very rarely: nerve damage and pneumothorax (punctured lung). Please be assured that all necessary precautions are taken to minimize the occurrence of these events.

Does acupuncture REALLY work?

There is a growing amount of evidence based research confirming acupuncture is successful at treating many medical complaints. If you are interested in such research, please visit the Resources page for the most current research. But, just as patient responses to certain medications and Western treatments may vary, response to acupuncture may vary as well. To best accommodate for this variance, Leah does not employ a one-size-fits-all treatment plan and instead approaches each patient as a unique individual and adjusts the treatment as needed to ensure the best results. Ultimately, the best way to decide if acupuncture works for you is to come on in and give it a try!

But HOW does it work?

By inserting fine needles in specific points, the body’s nervous system is activated, switching off our stress-induced "fight or flight" response, increasing immune system response and improving the blood circulation throughout.  Acupuncture stimulates the release of certain substances that relieve pain as well as reduce inflammation.

How many Treatments will I need?

The number of treatments varies from patient to patient, depending on the health status of each individual and the condition being treated. After the initial assessment, a treatment plan will be developed to ensure the most successful outcome. During the course of that treatment plan, alterations and adjustments may take place depending on patient response to the treatment.

Are the herbs safe to take?

Absolutely. Many measures are taken to ensure the quality and safety of every herbal supplement prescribed to each patient. Each formula undergoes rigorous testing in US laboratories both by the manufacturing company as well as 3rd party labs to ensure the formulas are free of heavy metals, toxins, and possible carcinogens.

What is Cupping?

Cupping is a form of treatment that uses glass cups to create a gentle suction that causes the skin and superficial muscle layer to be slightly drawn into the cup. It is much like the inverse of a massage - instead of applying pressure, it's gently pulling muscles outward. Many patients find it very relaxing and pain relieving.
