The foundation of Chinese Medicine principles is to identify any underlying causes that are contributing to the current health condition as well as taking into consideration the patient's health history and family health history. Because many factors contribute to developing a diagnosis and treatment that is unique for each patient, it can be a challenge to obtain research that fits in the Western science model. However, scientists are becoming increasingly aware of the effectiveness of Chinese medicine as more and more research comes to light. Below are just a few examples of how effective acupuncture is for many ailments.

Pain

Women's Health

  1. Department of Veteran Affairs Evidence Map of Acupuncture is a compilation of studies demonstrating the effectiveness of acupuncture for various conditions including: Pain (refer to Pg. 10), Mental Health (refer to Pg 19), and General Wellness (refer to Pg 15)
  2. Neck pain and Stiffness: study findings: electroacupuncture and acupuncture are effective in reducing the pain intensity. EAC was more effective for local pain relief. Both treatments assisted in increasing cervical range of motion. 
  3. Pain and Inflammation due to Appendicitis: suggests that acupuncture may be a feasible and effective treatment modality for decreasing subjective pain and inflammation as measured by WBC.
  4. Migraine Headaches: study findings: acupuncture is a better treatment option than the conventional drug therapy in not only relieving the pain of migraine but in also improving the psychological profile those who suffer from migraines.   

Mental Health

  1. Stress: acupuncture found effective in reducing Neuropeptide Y, a substance shown to be elevated in individuals with chronic stress.
  2. Anxiety: acupuncture is a promising intervention for patients with chronic anxiety symptoms that have proven resistant to other forms of treatment.
  3. Insomnia, depression, stress:  findings: acupuncture was highly effective in improving sleep quality, depression and stress.

  1. General women's health: an overview of the role of acupuncture and its clinical management in women's reproductive health. General conclusion was that acupuncture "may improve menstrual health and coping for women experiencing delays falling pregnant. There is experimental data showing that acupuncture can influence female reproductive functioning."
  2. PCOS: study findings: auricular acupuncture is more effective on reduction of menstruation disorders, compared to medicational therapy.
  3. Acupuncture and Assisted Reproduction Therapy (A.R.T.): study findings: acupuncture seems to be a useful tool for improving rate after A.R.T
  4. Acupuncture and Fertility and Pregnancy: study findings: acupuncture increases fertility and pregnancy rates

Other

  1. Chemotherapy Induced Nausea and Vomiting: study finds: Acupuncture is effective in preventing delayed CINV and promoting better quality of life
  2. Stress-Related Hypertension: acupuncture increases Heart Rate Variability indicating a relative decrease in physiologic stress.
  3. Treatment for Children: preliminary data suggest a 50% decrease in the use of pain medications and anxiety
